Having had the door to the coaching process open to him, Mark realised that there was no awards, qualifications or workshops that would take his professional develop any further. So in 2008 he enrolled at Bangor University’s School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science on a two year Part-time MSc in Applied Sports Science, and graduated in 2010 with a Master’s Degree. During his studies Mark examined Sports Psychology, Performance Physiology and Effective Coaching, as well as working alongside a qualified Sports Psychologist during a six month period of supervised experience with 4 members the North Wales Youth Climbing Team.
Mark has tried to pull together all that he has learnt in both a practical sense from over 15 years experience teaching climbing and his academic studies, by writing a book called ‘How to Climb Harder’ which was published in October 2010 by Pesda Press.
Mark also helped write a report for the Mountain Leader Training Boards of the need for Coaching Qualifications in Rock Climbing, the result of which is that the Boards are now developing a new coaching awards system to run alongside the existing award schemes.
